The Perfect Bathroom Renovation
Ekko Custom Cabinetry & Design of Calgary, Alberta
At Ekko Custom Cabinetry & Design, we are often engaged to supply and Calgary design cabinetry for the perfect bathroom renovation project . For this blog, we reviewed several articles in “Huffington Post”, “Houzz & Home” and by “Trusted Pros” and found bathrooms to be the most often renovated space in Canadian Homes – followed closely by Kitchens.
I remember growing up in the 50’s in a war-time home in a family of 5 and having (1) 40 sq. ft. bathroom in the house. My wife, grew up in a similar bathroom situation in a family of 8 ( 5 girls ) – all having to leave for school on the same bus !
My, how times have changed ! Now, most urban North American single-family home designs offer (3) bathrooms – a Half Bath (2 pc) on the main floor, a Main Bath (3 pc) on the 2nd floor and a devoted Master Bath (often 4 pc minimum) off the Master Bedroom.
The typical “Half Bath” is usually 34” X 84” (20 sq. ft.) with a toilet on one side and a vanity (or pedestal sink) on the opposite side
The “Main Bathroom” often still incorporates the 40 sq. ft. basic bath design model, especially where space and budget are critical issues. This format has (2) basic floor plans, each allowing a 30” toilet, a 30” vanity and a 30” X 60” tub / shower - these plans are tight but efficient .
The “Master Bath” has become a more recent indulgence. Depending on the space that can be made available, the design and features can be as creative as your floor plan and budget will allow.
When planning your bathroom renovation, think “function first”. Careful space planning is critical for one of the hardest –working spaces in the home. This is a workstation for preparing for the day as well as a refuge for resting and recovering at the end of a day. Consider the space you have and the space you want. Map the space – now is the time to do it right – do it right and you’ll be happy and enjoy it every day, don’t and you may regret it every day.
Consider expansion if that is an available option. Lighting is very important – natural for daytime, mood for night-time and relaxing, task for sinks, shower and reading. Also consider colours, motif, style, function, maintenance, safety and warmth. Introduce easily changed colour accents to the space with paint, towels, curtains and growing plants.
Plan for sufficient storage of toiletries, medicines, grooming aids, weight scales, waste containers, towels, etc. Depending on your vision, there are a host of additional amenities that should now be considered - a seat in the shower, a steam shower, heated floors, a deep soaker-tub, a built-in linen closet, speakers and sound-system or perhaps even a TV . Remember to dream – imagine a quiet relaxing bath with rainforest sounds in the background?
At Ekko Custom Cabinetry and Design, we strive to exceed you expectations. Whatever the reason for your renovation, consider this as an investment in your life and home – do it right the first time – you’ll be rewarded in your quality of life and the ultimate boost in your real estate value.
