What Was at the Top of the Kitchen Wish List in 2017 ?
2017 Kitchen Wish List
At Ekko Custom Cabinetry & Design, we are constantly monitoring current design trends for great new ideas that we can use to enhance our customer’s vision and provide a space that will stand the test of timeless good taste. With this in mind, we just reviewed a wonderful article in the Jan. 23, 2018 edition of “Houzz” written by Erin Carlyle on Jan. 18, 2018.
Houzz has accumulated data throughout 2017 and surveyed more than 1700 renovating homeowners as part of Houzz’s “2018 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study”. Here is what they’ve found to be the “Top of the Kitchen Wish list in 2017”.
Some of the most popular choices in 2017 included white cabinets and white countertops, wood floors, gray cabinets (or other accent colours) on the island and more attention to backsplash options. For the purposes of this blog, we will only relate to cabinetry, countertops and due to their relative influence on designs and layouts, appliances.
Countertops – replacing countertops is the single most popular undertaking (94% of the renovations sampled) followed closely by sinks, faucets and backsplashes which are all usually done in conjunction with a change in countertops. “Natural stone” and “engineered quartz” combined for 88% of the products chosen with a “wood slab” section being incorporated in 13% of those cases. “Engineered quartz” is now the most popular material, chosen by 43% of the homeowners. Keep in mind that “natural stone” represented 45% of the selections but when broken down into specific materials was selected as follows: granite (34%), natural quartzite (8%), marble (6%) and soapstone (5%). Also keep in mind that there was often more than one type of natural stone selected in a number of these jobs – hence, the sum of the parts is greater than a 100%. There are hundreds of amazing manufactured Quartz colours and patterns from which to choose – select from quality manufacturers such as Cambria, Caesarstone, Silestone and Hanstone. Please visit Ekko Cabinetry and Fineline Stone Co to view the array you have to work with. Let our experienced designers help coordinate your space. We also carry and install a wide range of Granite, Marble, Quartzite and Wood tops for your project.
Cabinet Colours – White cabinets continue to be the most commonly selected. This has been a popular choice in renovations for some time and 43% of the homeowners sampled have continued to choose this “neutral” for all or most of their cabinets. Wood was the second most popular selection, followed by another “neutral” paint selection – gray. At Ekko Cabinetry, we have noticed an increasing trend towards mixing any combination of the above colour choices to provide more “pop” and “warmth” to the Calgary kitchen design and a greater breadth of colour pallet to work with in the kitchen itself and all adjacent areas – think of the possibilities !
More recently, we have also noticed a strong move to accent colours of blues, greens, plums, yellows – the list is endless. These can be incorporate into islands, accent details, feature cabinets or even throughout the entire design – again, think of the possibilities.
Cabinet Styles – “Shaker” @ 57% of the selections, is the most popular cabinet style by far followed by “Flat Panel” (slab) @ 18% and “Raised Panel” @ 17%. Again, we have noticed an increasing tendency of mixing cabinet styles and colours. Within each of the above design categories there is a huge array of unique details and designs to satisfy almost any taste or desire for a more unique creation. Please visit Ekko Cabinetry to see what we have to offer.
Appliances – this is a whole other world of selections, features and budget decisions. Your priorities for products for refrigeration, cooking, warming and cleaning often determines the best design options and space considerations. Where to start and the budget to set are often inter-related and ultimately determines the design process. An initial meeting with your cabinet designer will often provide guidance in what you have space for, what is in your budget and how best to proceed in your design options – please visit our website and arrange a meeting with one of our experienced designers.
